Engineering Innovation
DesignTag – From Research to Award-Winning Innovation
During my Engineering Doctorate, my research with Algotronix contributed to the development of DesignTag, a small, low-power digital tag designed to help identify intellectual property embedded within electronic devices.
The technology was demonstrated publicly in 2007 and subsequently developed into a customer-facing system. My research included several variants of the technology, alongside work in cryptography and true random-number generation.
2007 – Elektra Student Engineer of the Year
In December 2007, I became the first winner of the Student Engineer of the Year category at the Elektra European Electronics Industry Awards. The award recognised my Engineering Doctorate research and generated extensive coverage across engineering, electronics, academic and STEM publications.

2008 – IET Innovation Award & NMI Emerging Technology Award
The following year, DesignTag received two major industry awards within three days. Algotronix won the Electronics category at the IET Innovation Awards and was Highly Commended in Security, before being named NMI Emerging Technology Company of the Year.

2016 – FDM Everywoman in Technology Inspiration Award
In 2016, I received the FDM Everywoman in Technology Inspiration Award. Contemporary coverage connected the award not only with my engineering role, but also with my work supporting careers, STEM outreach and women in engineering.

In the 2020 Queen's Birthday Honours, I was appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) for services to diversity and inclusion in electronic engineering.

In October 2023, I was inducted into the Scottish Engineering Hall of Fame, which recognises engineers associated with Scotland whose work has made a significant contribution to engineering and society.

2026 – Lifetime Achievement & Mentor of the Year
In 2026, I received the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Electronics Weekly Women Leaders in Electronics Awards. On the same evening, I was also named Mentor of the Year.

2014 – An Engineering Career
In 2014, The Observer featured my route into electronics engineering as part of an examination of why the UK needed to attract and retain more women in engineering.

Physics World featured me in its Ask Me Anything series, discussing my career in electronics engineering, digital design, problem-solving, engineering leadership, mentoring and the importance of continuing to learn.
2022 – Moving into the Space Industry
In 2022, I moved from aerospace into the rapidly growing space sector, joining Celestia UK as Head of Digital Systems.
Later that year, Paul Sheerin, Chief Executive of Scottish Engineering, highlighted Celestia UK in The Herald as one of three examples of excellence in Scotland's space sector. He also highlighted my appointment, technical experience and wider contribution to the engineering profession.

2024–2025 – Developing a New Generation of Satellite Gateway
At Celestia UK, I have been part of the team developing electronically steered phased-array gateway technology for satellite communications.
In 2024, the prototype Ka-band gateway successfully tracked Eutelsat OneWeb's JoeySat satellite in Low Earth Orbit, continuously receiving and processing its signal and demonstrating handover between phased arrays. Extended testing continued into 2025 as the programme progressed towards multi-beam and pre-production capability.

WES Female Student Conference
In 2009, I founded the WES Female Student Conference to help female engineering students see the breadth of careers open to them and meet women already working across the profession. The fuller story of the conference, its growth and its programmes is on my Volunteer page.

2014–2019 – Girls into Engineering
In 2014, I established Girls into Engineering at Selex ES in Edinburgh, bringing Primary 7 girls from three local schools into an engineering workplace to experience engineering for themselves.
The programme became an annual event in Edinburgh. In 2015 it formed part of National Women in Engineering Day and received a special visitor when His Majesty King Charles III, then HRH Prince Charles, Duke of Rothesayy joined the girls during their engineering activities.
The Edinburgh Evening News article is particularly valuable because it includes interviews with the girls as well as a substantial interview with me about the purpose of the event and the need to challenge stereotypes early.

2019 – Celebrating 100 Years of Women in Engineering
To mark the centenary of the Women's Engineering Society, I took part in events celebrating the women who helped shape engineering. During the Edinburgh International Science Festival, engineering historian Dr Nina Baker and I told the stories of pioneering women engineers whose achievements had often disappeared from public view.
